10. Ovulation in response to LH surge.
Hmm. LH acts on the thecal cells while FSH acts on the granulosa cells. Ovulation is due to substances secreted by the granulosa cells so how does the LH surge result in ovulation?
FSH in conjunction with estrogen induces the expression of LH receptors in very high density on the granulosa cells. Now granulosa cells are very sensitive to LH. Granulosa cells begin producing more antral fluid, digestive enzymes, and prostaglandins in response to LH. This leads to swelling of the follicle and breakdown of the follicular membrane resulting in rupture of the follicle and release of the ovum.
